The giants we face have different names: Fear. Discouragement. Loneliness. Worry. Guilt. Temptation. Anger. Resentment. Doubt. Procrastination. Failure. Jealousy. Call them what you will; they’re only giants, after all, like Goliath. He was a shade over nine feet tall, but it only added up to a bigger dent in the pavement once he fell. The bigger they come, the harder they fall.

Can you imagine...

walking into church one Sunday and seeing this announcement posted on the bulletin board?

oh, I know it might seem silly

...to think about attending a rehearsal for the Rapture—but here’s the amazing reality:

God’s Word outlines ten ways we should be preparing for Christ’s return!

And when you think about it, it only makes sense...rehearsal just means getting ready for something—it’s preparation for a future event. And that is exactly what we should be doing in light of Christ’s return.

QUESTIONS FOR NEW BELIEVERS

…need to study the Bible?

Why do Christians need to read and study the Bible?

The Bible is a Book which came directly from God’s heart. It was His desire that we know Him and His purpose, so He gave us the Bible as our guidebook. Within the pages of the Bible, we learn about God’s unconditional love for us. Once we become a follower of Christ, we look to the Bible for instruction on how to live in the world today. It corrects and exhorts us to refrain from sin and resist Satan’s snares. And the Bible encourages us to do the things we know we should do—such as love others, be a servant to all, and to forgive as we have been forgiven.

As we study God’s Word, we draw closer to Him and develop a deeper understanding of His love for us. Through the Holy Spirit, the Word of God illumines our understanding as we seek to know Him better. We don’t have to stumble through life on our own. Answers to daily living are found within the pages of the Bible. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Reading and studying the Bible is that light—it prepares us for life, gives us peace through the forgiveness of sin, shows us how to love God and others, and promises a future home in heaven. The Bible is God’s love letter to us—we need to read it!

MORE THAN 100 ANSWERS INCLUDING:

…trust Bible accuracy?

Why can we trust the accuracy of the Bible?

There are thousands of copies and portions of the Bible that translators can check the text against while they are translating the Bible. Based on the content and number of these manuscripts, we can be confident of the content and accuracy of Scripture. The Old Testament was copied by Jewish scribes who were meticulous in their work, counting every word and letter in each line they copied. In the New Testament, specifically, there are only minor differences in words or verses, and no fundamental Christian doctrine depends on these verses.

The Old Testament was copied by Jewish scribes who were meticulous in their work, counting every word and letter in each line they copied. In the New Testament, specifically, there are only minor differences in words or verses, and no fundamental Christian doctrine depends on these verses.

Most of the differences we notice when reading different English translations are a result of the translators’ choice of English words and not differences in the original languages. As the Bible says, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8).

Secular writings contemporary to biblical events also provide concrete evidence of the events that took place during the timeline of the Bible. Examples include: The Jewish historian Josephus wrote in the latter part of the first century that Pilate was responsible for the death of Jesus Christ. Also in the Bible, the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon are mentioned many times. These cities are also mentioned in Assyrian records, documenting their existence. Historical records throughout the annals of time have verified the accuracy of the Bible rather than disproved its truth.1

QUESTIONS FOR WELL-READ BELIEVERS

OT God vs NT God?

Why does it seem like God is wrathful in the Old Testament and loving in the New Testament?

Even though the Israelites disobeyed God and broke their covenant with Him on multiple occasions, God did not abandon them after He disciplined them. As Nehemiah recorded: “Nevertheless in Your great mercy You did not utterly consume them nor forsake them; for You are God, gracious and merciful” (Nehemiah 9:31). Our righteous God displayed His wrath when they rejected His counsel and turned to the worship of false gods, but He also heard their cries for help and answered them.

Judges 2:16-18 says, “The Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them…. For the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them.” While discipline was meted out, God also demonstrated His love, grace, and mercy throughout the Old Testament. God is a God of justice who disciplines His children, but He is also a loving and merciful God.

The New Testament introduces us to Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer, who displayed the loving care of His Father. First John 4:8 says, “God is love,” and the greatest demonstration of God’s love was shown through sending His Son to take the punishment for the sin of the world. “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). We are also reminded in Hebrews that “whom the Lord loves He chastens” (verse 9), so as sons and daughters of God we may experience discipline from our loving Heavenly Father.

So while the Old Testament shows God’s judgment for disobedience, beginning with the Fall in the Garden of Eden, we also see His compassion by sending His Son to rescue us—He is a God of love.

QUESTIONS FOR WELL-READ BELIEVERS

Old Testament salvation?

How were people saved in the Old Testament?

It’s argued that since all people who are saved are ultimately saved on the basis of the shed blood of Christ, people in the days of the Old Testament were saved because of their sure hope in the coming of the Messiah. They looked forward to the cross, and we look back at the cross and Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. Hebrews 11 lists a number of Old Testament individuals who were saved by their “faith” in the promise of God.

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13).
